Attendee Access and Email Verification

When someone registers from your Event Website, the only thing Eventene asks for up front is an email address. What happens next depends on whether that address is already on your event.

This article explains why Eventene sometimes asks an attendee to verify their email, and what each kind of attendee experiences.

The rule in one sentence

Knowing an email address is not the same as owning it — so Eventene will not open an existing registration until the person typing the address has proved they can receive mail at it.

First-time attendees at a public event

Someone who has never registered for your event, at an event set to Open registration:

  1. Types their email address
  2. Gives their first and last name
  3. Continues straight into registration

No verification code, no password, no account to create. There is nothing yet to protect — the registration they are creating didn't exist a moment ago.

Returning or already-known attendees

Someone whose address is already on your event — because you imported them, invited them, or they registered earlier:

  1. Types their email address
  2. Receives a 6-digit code at that address
  3. Enters it on the Check your email screen
  4. Continues into their existing registration

Until the code is entered, Eventene shows nothing about the person behind the address — not their name, not their answers, not their attendance, not even whether a registration exists. The only detail on that screen is the address the attendee typed themselves.

Attendees who are already signed in to Eventene under that same address have already proved it, and are not asked for a code.

Attendees who share an email address

Families, couples, and teams routinely share one address, and Eventene treats that as normal rather than as a problem.

Once the address is verified, the attendee sees Group Registration — everyone on your event associated with that address — and chooses which person to register or update. See Register Multiple People with One Email Address.

Verification matters more here, not less: one code protects everyone in the group.

Invite-only events

At an Invite Only event, an address that isn't on your guest list can't register at all. The attendee sees We couldn't find an invitation, with a suggestion to check which mailbox the invitation was sent to and a pointer to contact you.

That message is deliberately the same for every address that isn't invited, whether or not Eventene has ever seen it elsewhere. See Configure Registration for Invite-Only Events.

Why this protects your attendees

Registrations hold real personal information — names, answers to your questions, dietary needs, medical notes, what someone paid. Before verification, all it took to open a registration was knowing the registrant's email address, which is rarely a secret.

Verification means an attendee's registration can only be opened by someone who can actually read their mail. For you, that means the data you collect stays with the people who gave it to you.

Occasional extra checks

Two other things attendees may run into, both aimed at automated abuse rather than at real people:

  • Quick check — a short "confirm you're not a robot" step, shown when a browser or network has been behaving unusually. Passing it resumes exactly where they were.
  • Too many attempts — the form pauses briefly after repeated failed attempts, and tells the attendee roughly how long to wait.

Ordinary attendees registering once will not see either.

Helping an attendee who is stuck

What they report What is usually happening
"The code never arrived" Check their spam or junk folder; the code goes to the address exactly as typed. They can press Send another code
"It says my code isn't right" Codes are 6 digits and expire. Have them request a new one rather than retyping an old email
"It asked me to verify and I've never registered" Their address is already on the event — often because you imported or invited them
"It says a code was sent recently" One was. It's still valid; ask them to check their inbox before requesting another
"It can't find my invitation" The invitation likely went to a different address. Add the address they use, or resend to the one on file
