Direct Messages (1:1)

Direct Messages are one-to-one chats between two participants in the same Event. They are intended for private 1:1 communication between participants and are useful for side conversations that should not happen on the public Feed or in an Activity Room.

Who can use Direct Messages

Anyone in an Event where the Messaging Center is enabled. Both organizers and participants can initiate 1:1 chats. Direct Messages are part of the Messaging Center in the Eventene Mobile App — they are not available in Webforms.

Direct Message availability depends on Profile Visibility. A participant must have Profile Visibility turned on to be reachable by Direct Message. Profile Visibility is an account-level setting in the Mobile App's Account Settings; it applies to all Personas on the account and persists across Events.

If a participant has Profile Visibility off, no one can start a Direct Message with them — even within the same Event. Existing chats from before visibility was turned off remain accessible to both parties.

Starting a chat

Two common entry points:

  • From any chat surface: long-press a person's name in the Event Feed or an Activity Room and select Chat
  • From a profile: open the person's profile on the Attendees tab and tap Chat >

Once a chat exists, it appears in both participants' Messaging Center.

What you can send

  • Text messages with threaded replies
  • Photos and videos
  • Long-press a message to copy it or download an image

Privacy

  • Direct Messages are intended for private 1:1 communication between participants.
  • Turning off Profile Visibility prevents new chats from being initiated, but existing chats remain accessible to both parties

When to use Direct Messages

  • A quick side question to one attendee
  • Coordinating logistics with one person without crowding the Feed
  • Reaching out to a speaker or sponsor (if their profile is visible)

For broadcasts, use the Event Feed. For Activity-scoped discussion, use a Room.

Common questions

Why can't a participant start a Direct Message with someone? The other participant likely has Profile Visibility turned off. Profile Visibility is an account-level setting in the Mobile App's Account Settings; without it on, the person does not appear as reachable, even to others in the same Event.

Can a participant block or hide a chat? Turning off Profile Visibility prevents new chats from being initiated. Existing chats remain accessible to both parties.

Are Direct Messages part of the Webform? No. Direct Messages are part of the Messaging Center in the Mobile App. A participant using only the Webform will not see them.
