Using Symbols and Emoji

A symbol at the start of a title turns a list of words into something attendees can scan in a second. Eventene needs no setup for this: the symbols are ordinary characters, and you paste them in the same way you type a name.

Compare a menu of information pages without them:

Directions
Schedule
Speakers
Carpools

With them:

๐Ÿ“ Directions
๐Ÿ“… Schedule
๐ŸŽค Speakers
๐Ÿš— Carpools

The second list is easier to use on a phone, where attendees are reading a narrow screen and looking for one thing.

Where to use symbols

Paste a symbol anywhere you write content for attendees:

  • Page names, which become the menu of information pages on your Event Website and in the Eventene mobile app
  • Activity names, which appear throughout schedules and registration
  • Event and Activity descriptions
  • Questions and instructions you write for attendees

Put the symbol first, then a space, then the words.

Best practices

  • Lead with the symbol. It only helps scanning if it sits at the start of the line, where the eye lands first.
  • One symbol per title. Two compete with each other and the title stops being quick to read.
  • Be consistent. If ๐Ÿ“ means directions on one page, use ๐Ÿ“ for directions everywhere in the event.
  • Always keep the words. The symbol supports the label, it does not replace it. A title that is only an emoji means nothing to someone using a screen reader, and little to anyone else.
  • Use them where they earn their place. A symbol on every line is the same as no symbols at all.
  • Expect small differences. The same character is drawn slightly differently on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. The meaning carries across, the artwork varies.

Copying a symbol into Eventene

  1. Highlight the symbol you want in the tables above and copy it
  2. Open the field you are editing, such as a Page name in Manage Pages or an Activity's Name
  3. Paste the symbol at the start of the title, add a space, then type the words

Nothing else is needed. These are standard characters rather than images or uploads, so they travel with your text to the Event Website, the mobile app and your emails.

If you want more choices than the tables above, the official Unicode charts list every available character. Your computer also has a built-in picker: press Control + Command + Space on a Mac, or Windows + . (period) on Windows.

Keeping it accessible

Someone using a screen reader hears the symbol's description read aloud before your title, so "๐Ÿ“ Directions" is announced as "round pushpin, Directions". That works well when the words carry the meaning on their own. It falls apart when they do not, which is why every title needs its text label, one symbol is better than three, and decorative strings of symbols are worth leaving out.
